Founded by siblings Sasha and Zac in 2019, BSKL for Malayan Tigers roared back into action this year with their third major campaign to create awareness of the plight of the Malayan tiger and raise funds for tiger conservation in Malaysia.

The 2026 Tiger Team, consisting of Sasha (Y12), Zac (Y10), Ruby, Anna and Pranika (Y12), Leonard (Y11), Max (Y10), Mirielle and Thomas (Y8), Yushin (Y7), Shanaya, Zi-En, Layan, Grace and Shivika (Y6), worked tirelessly to ensure that the community was made aware of the existential threat that the remaining 150 Malayan tigers in the wild, face today. 

Through student assemblies, WWF talks, tiger themed competitions, social media, and the visually compelling multilingual posters displayed across the entire campus, the Tiger Team ensured that they left no stone unturned to spread their message with a clear call to action - Defend the roar in our jungles before it’s too late. 

To support their call to action the team ran several initiatives to raise funds for the cause. The cornerstone of their fund raising effort was the new and impressive website/online store that sold tiger themed merchandise including an exclusive BSKL for Malayan tigers product collection. The BSKL community responded to the store with overwhelming generosity buying out almost all of the products that were up for sale. 

The Earth Week celebrations at school, held from 30 March to 2 April, saw a plethora of fun-filled tiger-themed activities, both in and out of the classroom, that reminded everyone of the Malayan tiger’s fight for survival, whilst having fun. Throughout the week, the Jabatan Perhilitan exhibition remained open to students and families, providing an exciting insight into Malaysia’s wildlife. The Tiger Team also worked hard to set up The Pak Belang market where students, parents, external vendors and the Tiger Team themselves set up shop to sell food and other products to contribute to the fund raising effort. Once again the BSKL community swung into action supporting every stall in the market and yet again almost everything that was up for sale was sold! The ‘Students vs Staff Basketball Match, which was the final event of the Earth Week celebrations, generated a lot of fun and excitement and was definitely an event to remember. The money raised from ticket sales for the match was pretty impressive too!

The crowning moment of the whole campaign was of course the celebration of BSKL’s third Tiger Day on March 30th where staff and students came to school in their BSKL for Malayan Tigers T-shirts. You could see black and orange everywhere you looked and by wearing the colours of the tiger, BSKL definitely made a statement - we will defend the roar!

At the start of this campaign, the Tiger Team set a target to raise more money than they ever did in their previous individual campaigns, and with the support of the entire BSKL community and well wishers from across the world, they actually did it. The team has raised RM102,800 this year bringing the total amount of money raised for tiger conservation by BSKL for Malayan tigers since its inception, to over RM240,000. The funds raised this year was handed over to Jabatan Perhilitan (National Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) of Peninsular Malaysia) and WWF in an official ceremony in BSKL on the 8th of June with VIPs from both organisations attending.

BSKL for Malayan Tigers started as a result of a school project on endangered animals and little did the two young primary students Sasha and Zac know at that point in time that they were starting a movement that would get staff, students and parents alike, rallying for the Malayan tiger. It was amazing to see how the whole BSKL community was brought together as one voice for the greater good. 

BSKL for Malayan Tigers is extremely grateful to every member of staff, student and parent who so willingly contributed their time, effort and money to support the cause. None of this would have been possible if it weren’t for the amazing support from the whole community. A special thank you to Mrs Stringer who has been an amazing mentor to the BSKL for Malayan Tigers team since 2019 and to Mrs Humphrey for all the support given throughout this year’s campaign.

The Malayan tiger’s fight for survival is far from over and, if needed, BSKL for Malayan tigers will be back on campus to continue to do its part to save our national animal from extinction.
